The new belts will be shorter than the old belts that came off of your vacuum because belts lose elasticity quickly after being installed. A new belt will usually be an inch or two shorter than a used belt which is why belts should be replaced every 6 to 12 months even if they look good. They may be tight enough to spin the brush roll but when you are vacuuming the resistance from the carpet will cause the belt to slip on the brush roll. A slipping belt will not properly clean your carpets.
